The Blum Resource Center, located at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), is seeking a volunteer intern to help develop, organize and modernize its collection of consumer-oriented health information.

The Blum serves as DFCI’s front door to patient education about cancer, its treatment, prevention, complementary care and about coping with this complicated diagnosis. Here people from all over New England can research and learn about their diagnosis through computer searches, educational programs, its lending library and its distribution of booklets, brochures and pamphlets.

It is also DFCI’s front door to many of the Institute’s patient and family programs. Free hats, new patient care bags and backpacks for children whose parents have a cancer diagnosis are among the items distributed at the Blum.

The Center’s manager is managed by a social worker and staffed by volunteers.

The Center is looking for a volunteer intern to help with the following activities:

- Conduct an inventory,

- Respond to patient requests for information,

- Staff the library,

- Opportunities to lead and implement patient education programs

- Assist the library in moving patrons towards using technology to obtain information,

- Craft and implement recommendations for the organization for non-circulating materials like brochures, pamphlets, booklets,

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter to recommend and implement changes to the Blum’s operations that will improve the Center’s ability to serve people with cancer and their families.

Hours: The Center is open on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Address: The Center is located in the Institute’s new Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston. It is within walking distance of the school.
